Jiujiang City in Jiangxi Province is a cultural and historic city situated at the crossing of the Yangtze River and the Beijing-Kowloon Railway. This two-thousand-year-old city is a noted town in ancient China, for years it served as a communication center along the middle reaches of the Three Kingdoms (220-280 AD). The city was a customs station in the third century and became a country town in 589 AD. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, it was an important center of the tea trade. In 1861 it was opened to foreign trade. Jiujiang now has one city, nine counties, four districts and Mount. Lushan Administration Bureau under its jurisdiction. In total the city covers an area of 18.8 thousand kilometers.

Jiujiang City is located in the northern Jiangxi Province, on the southern bank of the juncture of the lower and middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Situated at the juncture of Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, and Anhui Provinces, and in the middle of the Beijing-Kowloon Railway. You can pretty much get anywhere by public transport, Jiujiang is the transport hub of East China. With student discounts, it is cheap and easy to travel by train or coach anywhere in China.
If you need a bit of fresh air, there are plenty of parks, lakes, mountains and green spaces, this is ideal for walking and mountain hiking.
Jiujiang has many scenic spots with distinctive characteristics due to its long civilized history and beautiful, special, and rugged natural sites. Jiujiang boasts a famous mountain (Lushan Mountain), a great river (the Yangtze River), and a well-known Lake (Poyang Lake). It has more than four hundred tourist sites and one hundreds and twenty tourist spots available.
Lushan Mountain is the national key tourist spot and one of the ¡°Forty Excellent Tourist Cities of China.¡± In 1996, Lushan Mountain was approved by the UNESCO as the only ¡°World Cultural Landscape¡± of China and was recorded in World Heritage list. The world-renowned Bailudong (White Deer Cave) Academy in Lushan Mountain once enjoyed the reputation as the first Academy in China and was once the Leading Academy in the World. This advantageous location with its¡¯ profound history and culture provides Jiujiang University with a rich cultural atmosphere.
The Yangtze River, which is the third longest in the world and the first longest in China, originates from Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and becomes broad wide in Jiujiang.
Poyang Lake is situated in the west of Jiangxi Province, on the south bank of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and between Jiujiang and Nanchang. It has the Yangtze River to the north and is protected by Lushan Mountain to the west.
The whole territory of JiuJiang extends 270 kilometers long, and is 140 kilometers wide from north to south. It covers 18,800 square kilometers in total, accounting for 11.3% of the total area of Jiangxi Province boasting 4.6 million people. The population of the urban area is 510,000. The Climatic Features of JiuJiang are subtropical humid monsoon climate, drizzles in spring; and rainstorms in summer; autumn droughts and cold periods in winter. The average temperature is 17.5 Celsius Degree in spring, 28.2 Celsius Degree in summer, 20 Celsius Degree in autumn and 6.3 Celsius Degree in winter.
Living in Jiujiang
Security:
- Lock the door when leaving the room. Do not keep large amounts of cash in the dorm or flats, put them in the bank and keep valuable things in a safe place.
- Though Jiujiang is a beautiful city, there are some people on the street who are interested in your pocket. When you go to the city center, make sure that you don¡¯t carry large sum of cash with you, only take changes if possible, and leave your passport/ID card in a safe place.
- Do not swim in unsupervised locations such as ponds or lakes, which have no lifesaving facilities.
- Never lend your room key to strangers, try not to lend or borrow key from your classmates & friends.
- Never tell anybody else your bank account passwords, even he/she is your close friends.
Custom Tips:
- Don¡¯t be surprise when the city people stare at you while walking on the street, they don¡¯t mean to be rude, they may be just curious as they seldom see a person like you in their whole life.
- Please keep calm when the city people offend your religion or custom (e.g. If a waitress recommend you some food which may against your religion or culture), they had no intention to intrude on your culture and religion, just because they know little about your culture.
- Please be nice to the kids, especially when they want to practice English with a foreigner even while you walking on the street.
d) If you have any questions and problems on campus, you can stop any student passing-by to get the information you want. Most of the students on campus can speak quite good English, and all the students are ready to help you.
Hospital and Clinic: There is one clinic on the main campus, and the ambulance from the city hospital can reach the students dormitory in about 10 minutes. Jiujiang University Affiliated Hospital and No.1 People¡¯s Hospital of Jiujiang in the city center are comprehensive hospitals.

Eating: The local food could be too salty and spicy compared with other food. On the main campus, there are seven canteens that serve different types of Chinese food. Cash is not acceptable in most of the canteens on campus; You need to use Golden Dragon Card (Jin Long Ka) to pay. The card costs £¤10 and you can put as much as you like on the card. Off the campus, there are many places near the school gate and in the downtown for eating. Down most side streets near the college gates there are many small restaurants.

Accommodation: Lianxi Hotel (2-star), just inside the gate, has reasonable rooms and restaurant. If anyone wants to try some better hotels in the city, they can go to S&N International Hotel (5-star) and Qishi Hotel (4-star) in the city center.
Transportation:
On campus: Buses run from the students¡¯ center to the school gate on weekends, ticket fee is half a Yuan.
Off campus:
- Taxis are relatively cheap and can be picked up outside the college gate at most times of the day. Of course, drivers don¡¯t speak English, so you may need to have the name of the place you are going written in Chinese Characters.
- There are two bus services that run between the town and the school gate. Number 101, which comes from the countryside and drives past the school gate is the fastest and most direct bus to the city center. Number 105, which starts at the gate of the college and goes to the city via the railway station. It can be interesting to get on one for a round
- It will cost you 1 Yuan each time regardless of the journey; the only exception is the double-decked bus (No. 5) that costs 1.5 Yuan. You need the exact change as you put your money into a slot and no change is available.
- Railway station: Taxies and No. 105 buses go there. The railways stretch out to many other provinces or districts. You may buy a Direction Book from the station to check which route is suitable for you if you want to go other places.
- Long Distance Bus Station: it is Near Jiujiang University affiliated Hospital in the city center, Taxies and No. 105 buses and No.101 buses all go there. The buses at the Long Distance Station run to every district in Jiangxi province, also some places in other provinces (e.g. Shanghai, Wuhan, Nanjing).
- Changbei Airport (Nanchang), It¡¯s 1.5 hours by car away from Jiujiang, the flights go to most of important city around China. Some flights go to Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur
Shopping:
On campus: The University has 2 supermarkets [general stores], one is underneath the Students Center, and the other is near No.3 Students Canteen. It sells everyday commodities. Open daily 9:30 to 22:00.
Off campus: It will take you 20-40 minutes to go to the city center by bus. There are lots of shops or supermarkets available.
NGS (Nong Gong Shang) shaped like a boat, one of the biggest and best supermarkets in JiuJiang, is on Bin Jiang Lu, right alongside the Yangtze River.
Lian Sheng Supermarket is on the Da Zhong Lu and Xunyang Lu.
The Computer DIY Center is on the Da Zhong Lu, two large computer markets opposite one another.
Walking Street [Da Zhong Lu] - full of clothes shops, shoe shops, opticians, and other odds and ends. You can bargain in most of the stores.
Post:
On campus: There is one post office on the second floor of No.4 Service Building. You can send international mails there, it¡¯s recommended to ask for a receipt and a tracking number when you do that.
Off campus: China Post Office is near Gantang Lake and NGS. Please use the following format to have letters addressed to you:

Tele-Communication: There are two Tele Companies branches in the Student Service Building. You can register a mobile phone account or pay their telephone bill there.
Banking: There are three ATM machines at the school gate. One belongs to China Construction Bank and the others belong to the China Communications Bank and Bank of China. Cash can be withdrawn from the ATMs. You can open up an account at the local banks. Any issues related to a foreign account, money transferring, cashing traveler¡¯s cheques, please goes to the Bank of China, Jiujiang City Branch, you may be requested to present your passport and a copy of that.

Services:
Hairdressing: you can have your haircut on the campus (it is near students¡¯ canteen and near the school gate. Of course, there are some well-equipped salons in the city center. They usually have the well-done craftsmen.
Laundry: Every flat is equipped with a washing machine. In Service Building 4, there is a laundry. You can ask them for help with some payment. In the city center, there are lots of Dry-cleaners; you also can send your clothes there.
Bookstores: On campus: There are two bookstores on the main campus. One is on the way from the gate to the teaching area; the other is on the second floor of No. 4 Service Building.
Off campus: Jiujiang Xinhua Bookstore¡ªthe biggest bookshop in town. Maps, English books are available there. It is on Xunyang Lu.
Fire Procedures:
- Study the instructions in the FIRE ACTION notice displayed in your room/flat, and those displayed in the public areas of your accommodation.
- WHENEVER the fir alarm sounds in your accommodation, leave the building IMMEDIATELY, following the procedure in the notice displayed in your room/flat, and those displayed in the public areas of your accommodation.
- NEVER use a lift as a means of escaping from a building in which the fire alarm is sounding.
- Remember it is criminal offence, as well as a disciplinary one, for anyone to tamper with fire alarm systems, fire fighting equipment, fire notices or fire escape notices. This includes blocking escape routes, covering or removing detector heads and misusing extinguishers. If you are aware of any of the faults in any of the fire protection equipment please report this immediately to a member of staff.
- Only the Fire brigade can authorize you to re-enter the building. Never return to a building until authorized to do so, even if the alarm has been silenced. You must obey all instructions from staff and a member of staff.
- Do not, under any circumstances, tamper with or cover any smoke detector within or in the vicinity of your accommodation. This will endanger your safety and that of other residents.
